OK you need to double click on the smart object layer to edit it, it will open up a new document window that you can edit. When you make your changes click on the X to exit and you will be ask to save your changes. If that doesn't help can you upload the PSD file? I notice that if I deactivate the uppermost high pass filter for the rough contours the artefacts I want to remove disappear.

Yes it's just a merged copy of the layers but without knowing your workflow it's hard to say what is causing your issue, you are obviously selecting a layer that is not editable with the tool your trying.
